The Tugun Seahawks are defying Mother Nature in a bid to keep rugby league going, not just for them, but for clubs across the Gold Coast.

With the weather raining on the parade of a number of competitions and games across the state over the past few weeks - causing cancellations and postponements from Mackay down to the south east corner – the Tugun club have stepped up to keep playing in whatever way possible.

The club first agreed to take on a Helensvale game a few weeks ago then hosted an entire round of the Gold Coast A Grade competition at their home grounds on Sunday, May 15.

A Grade coach Clint Barends then helped organise the club’s Round 7 clash with Ormeau Shearers yesterday, Sunday, May 22, after the rest of the round was postponed due to the relentless amount of rain Queensland has copped.

Not only have Tugun been rewarded with their persistence – notching up three wins in a row in the A Grade competition – but their hard work has also been recognised.

While the club know they have been blessed with a field with excellent drainage, Queensland Rugby League Gold Coast area manager Brendon Lindsay said the hospitality of Barends and the club as a whole had not gone unnoticed.

“They’ve been very accommodating, very positive,” Lindsay said.

“They’re really going above and beyond for our competition. They’ve also been playing the Tweed Seagulls (Hostplus Cup team) out of their venue as Piggabeen has been flooded.

“The club is really supporting our game at the moment. It’s a support for us and the major competitions.”

Barends in particular stepped up over the past week in the absence of club secretary, Karen Denny.

He said it’s been hard to watch games get cancelled across the region, but he knew the Tugun fields could handle footy, even in a downpour.

“We just wanted to keep footy going,” Barends said.

“Down at Tuges, we’re a team and we all work together. We just wanted to get a game together last weekend so we thought we’d make contact with (Lindsay) and get it to go ahead.

“Without a doubt when other games are cancelled, you start to get concerned and you don’t want to endanger the players. That’s the first thing we think about. But given the way our field is, we knew we could play.

“We didn’t want to play a midweek game. It’s pretty tough, playing three games in seven days so we opted to try to get it to go ahead. We’ve also won three in a row and that was the other reason to play the game – to build a little bit of momentum.

“Ormeau were appreciative the game went ahead. It’s just good to play footy.”

Tugun came away with a 24-16 victory over Ormeau.

They also had another reason to celebrate this week, after receiving the latest instalment to their recovery equipment – a spa bath.

A photo of Barends testing out the spa bath was uploaded to the club’s Facebook page in what he said was the ultimate “stitch up”, but he said it was an investment Tugun wanted to make for their players.

“We decided to invest into recovery for the boys to make it a little bit easier on game days,” he said.

“We have an ice bath and sauna and we were waiting for the trifecta to come in – the spa bath. We put it in Friday and mucked up the temp. On Saturday, I fixed it and sent the photo to the president and he put the photo on the page.

“I’ve been stitched up big time. But the old boys like myself, we tend to use the recovery facilities more than the players at the moment. We’re in it everyday.”
