Competition heavyweights face off in Round 10 of Hastings Deering Colts

Round 10 of the Hastings Deering Colts competition will start with a bang as a number of the competition's heavyweights meet, setting the tone for a big weekend ahead.

One of the first matches of the round will see the first-placed Central Queensland Capras and third-placed Redcliffe Dolphins clash on Saturday afternoon, while the Brisbane Tigers will go up against Townsville Blackhawks, bringing together another two teams at the pointy end of the competition.

The Blackhawks are currently sitting in second, while the Tigers are in seventh - but the Tigers sit just four points behind the Blackhawks on the ladder, reflecting how close the competition is at this stage of the season.

It’s been a full 12 months since the Blackhawks and Tigers last came together and it was the Tigers who won by two points.

This week the Blackhawks are coming off a loss to the Capras while the Tigers are coming off a loss to Wynnum Manly Seagulls.

Both teams will have things to fix this week. The Tigers will have to go back to basics and fix their first 40 minutes after it took them a while to get started against Wynnum Manly - 43 minutes to be exact and by that time Wynnum Manly were up 14-0.

But despite the slow start, Tigers coach Mark Gliddon thought the performance was not too bad from his team.

“The game against Wynnum was old-fashioned and we really got stuck into each other,” Gliddon said.

“We are both coming off a loss so someone is going to lose two in a row after this weekend.

“We have reviewed their loss to the Capras and they are a good team. Both teams are good teams so we need to just prepare for the Blackhawks.

“They’re going to have Jordan Lipp back from Cup so he’s a danger for us.”

Despite the result, the Tigers had some heavy hitters, with Sione Finau scoring two tries to wake the Tigers up. He also registered two line breaks for his hard work.

The Tigers' wingers have also impressed coach Gliddon.

“Our wingers are very young but they’re very much what you want in a 2022 winger - lean, can jump, and fast," Gliddon said.

“Finau and Ariki Wallace have been great. They both make great metres and have a real impact.”

The Blackhawks came away from their loss to the Capras without the two points but plenty to learn. It was a tight game with only two points at half-time separating the teams.

The Blackhawks just dipped away at the end and the Capras finished strongly with three second half tries.

Meanwhile, the Tigers were felled by Wynnum Manly, who had a great win at home over the Tigers 22-14 last week. Wynnum Manly started well and that momentum carried them through until the end.

Luke Phillips was a gun for Wynnum Manly, kicking three goals and making two line breaks and 221 metres with a try.

This week, Wynnum Manly will turn their attention to the Sunshine Coast Falcons, after the Falcons were dealt a savage blow in Round 11, going down to Burleigh Bears 34-22.

The Falcons didn’t have the ball and the Bears controlled possession, and when the Bears had it they scored seven tries. A margin of 18-4 at half-time was too big of a hole for the Falcons to climb out of last week.

However, if the Falcons start well this week they can fix a lot of these problems.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Tweed Seagulls will take on Mackay Cutters after last week flexing their muscle against Ipswich Jets to take a 34-26 victory.

Four tries to Brent Barnes made Tweed an impossible force and he will be back again this week with Mackay in his sights.

Tweed got away to a 20-8 lead at half-time against Ipswich - it was the perfect start and the Jets couldn’t get it back.

Mackay meanwhile ran into the Dolphins and found their own unstoppable force.

Despite the loss, Hugh Arthur racked up 38 tackles and Flynn Camilleri made 192 run metres. Brenton Baira also made two line breaks for Mackay.

The third-placed Dolphins were always going to be hard for the Cutters to overcome last week and the Dolphins fought the good, hard fight against Mackay to come away with a 20-8 win.

It was a very even game and to finish with the win will please the Dolphins - especially the Williams of the side. William Dobson scored two tries, William Boland added another and Connor Williams nabbed his own four-pointer.

Dobson made 217 run metres and scored two tries and Braith Major made 32 tackles.

But Redcliffe will certainly have to step up that "good, hard fight" against the competition-leading Capras this week, who showed how dangerous they are with their 36-26 win over the Blackhawks.

The Capras had a great second half scoring three tries. Marcus Turner scored two tries and Jordan Lipp brought back his Hostplus Cup experience and made two line-breaks and scored two tries.

Wrapping up this Saturday's action, Souths Logan Magpies will meet Ipswich off the back of an extremely successful trip to Oakey that brought great results for the Magpies and Brayden Paix.

Paix kicked 10 goals from 11 attempts and scored a try in the 64-8 win.

Cruise Ten put in a 10 out of 10 performance with 261 run metres and 24 tackles for Souths. The Magpies dominated every part of the game.

The Jets meanwhile were beaten by Tweed 34-26.

Two tries in the first nine minutes wasn’t a great start and the Jets kept losing momentum to be down 20-8 at half-time.

Mamakumai Naiyep scored three tries for the Jets and Jordan Afamasaga scored two in the second half within five minutes of each other to give the Jets hope.

Round 10 will continue into Sunday, with Burleigh meeting Norths in the first match of the day.

With several top-of-the-table showdowns this weekend, this clash will be the game that showcases two really in-form sides, with the Bears and Devils both enjoying great wins last round.

The Bears were too good for the Falcons last week and will be pretty happy with themselves. The Bears scored at consistent time intervals and that put the Falcons under pressure.

With 54 per cent of the ball and an 87 per cent completion rate the Bears were unstoppable.

Isaac Matalavea-Booth made 193 metres and Ben Kay made 34 tackles.

The Devils meanwhile won 50-22 over the Pride, scoring 10 tries. The Devils were going over half the field every set with 52 metres travelled by the fifth tackle.

That momentum was too much for anyone to stop.

William Curran made 228 metres.

The match to close out Round 10 will be the Pride versus the Clydesdales.

It might be a high-scoring affair as both teams are struggling with defence. The Pride missed 99 tackles against the Devils and the Clydesdales missed 95.

Pride's Tom Spark tried to fix the situation with 24 tackles.

The Clydesdales lost 64-8 to the Magpies and only had 36 per cent of the ball which is hard to overcome.

Then they allowed 21 line breaks - it is safe to say that defence will need to be fixed by the Clydesdales.
