BRL Round 13 preview: Top five race wide open

After Pine Rivers and Valleys played their washed-out Round 7 match last weekend with a win to the Bears, the top five of BRL A grade is still a lottery.

West Brisbane are on top of the CAOS Premier A Grade competition with twelve straight wins and 33 points.

Bulimba (29) with only the two losses sit alone on second while Pine Rivers (26) now own third spot after last weeks 42-22 routing of Valleys.

Beenleigh (24) have dropped to fourth and fifth spot is shared by Brighton, Valleys and Wynnum Juniors, who are all on 21 points and only divided by for-and-against.

Normanby (17), Carina (15) and Souths Junior (13) complete the ladder with six rounds to go.

Valleys take on Carina at Emerson Park at 3pm on Saturday (available on DiehardsTV).

The reigning premiers will need to find a late season surge like last year if they are hoping to post their third premiership.

The Diehards raced to an 18-0 lead last week before the Bears took control.

Carina similarly in their last start against the Panthers were in the contest until half-time. Carina has nothing to lose as a finals spot looks out of reach.

If both sides can play the full 80 minutes this should go down to the wire.

West Brisbane meanwhile is at home to Brighton, also at 3pm (available on PanthersTV) and the mud and blood are looking to keep their unbeaten run alive.

West Brisbane was tested last start against the Tigers before a motivational chat at half-time produced an explosive second stanza to roll Carina.

The Roosters have been in and out of the top five as they look to ruin the Panthers' unbeaten record.

Brighton bounced back after a loss to Bulimba to take the away points against Beenleigh two weeks ago. The Roosters at their best will test West Brisbane.

Elsewhere, Pine Rivers will be at home to take on Bulimba at 4.45pm (available on BRLTV).

Second versus third doesn’t get any better than this. The Bears showed they can score points anywhere against Valleys last week, with all tries scored by their forwards.

Bulimba have the cattle up the middle to hold the Bears but what of the backline? Bulimba have only lost two games and there is a reason for that, and Pine Rivers will look to make it three.

Souths Junior and Wynnum Manly Juniors will come together at 4.45pm at Brandon Park.

The Seagulls share fifth spot as they take on the Magpies, who have at times been outstanding.

Souths could very well test the inconsistent Seagulls. The Juniors held on to a two-point win last start against Valleys (32-30) while the ‘Maggies’ came up against a smoking Pine Rivers (54-10).

The last time they came together it was end-to-end footy before the Seagulls prevailed.

Normanby were outclassed by Bulimba last start and will need to show the form they put on Pine Rivers (16-10) three weeks ago if they are to topple the Pride.

Beenleigh have moved out of the top three for the first time this season and will need to find their early season form that menaced the competition.
