Round 15 Hastings Deering Colts preview: 'We have got ourselves back some momentum'

It may not be finals time in the Hasting Deering Colts but this week may be the finals of August when the Brisbane Tigers take on the Sunshine Coast Falcons in a fifth versus sixth battle.

Brisbane Tigers v Sunshine Coast Falcons

Tigers have had the weekend off after a big win over the Ipswich Jets two weeks ago. The Tigers were an immoveable force with a 72-10 win.

The Tigers scored 13 tries but most pleasing was the fact the Jets didn’t score until the 58th minute, as the Tigers looked like keeping a clean sheet. Jonah Glover is accumulating points like they’re footy cards and now has 130 points.

Brisbane Tigers coach Mark Gliddon is happy with the progress of the Tigers.

“Jonah hasn’t played a lot of rugby league and is still eligible for Colts next season so he’s young but progressing nicely,” Gliddon said.

“It wasn’t that long ago we lost three games in a row. We have got ourselves back some momentum with four wins in a row now.

“This will be a good game, Falcons are very similar to us and they have a lot of the same structures."

As for who has impressed Gliddon, it’s his wingers.

“You don’t normally get to say that about wingers but both Sione Finau and Ariki Wallace have been great," Gliddon said.

The Falcons were no slouches either against the Western Mustangs on Sunday. It took five minutes for Kaleb Sutton to enter the match and score a try, and from there he was never out of the game.

Sutton scored two tries and made 247 run metres for the Falcons.

Falcons coach Jamie Vogler knows where the Falcons' strength lies.

“Kaleb Sutton has been great all year, he trains with Cup and plays Colts but he’s been great,” Vogler said.

“We have a smaller pack so we can’t play that power game but Sutton takes it up every week.

“This week is going to be a great game, Easts are close to the form team and will be a great test for us. We are underdogs for sure.”

The Falcons took more than their share of the ball with 59 per cent and turned it into 13 line breaks and 57 tackle breaks.

If these two teams bring this defence and attack this game will be a cracking pre-finals encounter.

Townsville Blackhawks v Western Clydesdales

The Blackhawks' last two wins against the Clydesdales have been massive, with the score sitting at 158 to 36 going back to 2021.

The Blackhawks are coming off a 76-6 win against Northern Pride, with 14 tries. Dylan White is leading the points-scoring list with 156 points.

Adam Mitchell and Jesse Yallop were great in attack and the Blackhawks also have the leading try scorer with 22 tries.

The Clydesdales have three games left to get their first win of the season and it would be massive if it came this week against the Blackhawks.

The Clydesdales just didn’t have enough ball against the Falcons and with 41 per cent of the ball you’re always going to struggle.

The Clydesdales defence just gives too much momentum to the opposition and then it becomes too hard to stop the damage.

Lachlan Ghee was a great attacking option for the Clydesdales with 145 run metres and Darryl Erepia made 34 tackles.

Ipswich Jets v Wynnum Manly Seagulls

The Jets just couldn’t stop Brisbane Tigers and would have spent the weekend off last week trying to find a way start the game that doesn’t leave them chasing points.

A score of 30-0 at half-time is never going to be pegged back no matter how good a team you are. When you miss 42 tackles it just keeps building.

The Seagulls would be close to the form team of the competition; their last two wins against the Jets have resulted in big wins and they will be looking to pull the alpha move again and send a clear message to the other finals-bound teams.

The Seagulls haven’t lost a game since Round 2 against the Redcliffe Dolphins and last week they got revenge on Redcliffe with a 36-28 win.

It was the exact kind of win the Seagulls will be take great pride in before the finals - less ball and having to defend their way to a win.

Luke Phillip was great with 179 run metres and Ben Farr was terrific with two line breaks. The Seagulls are true football beauty and watching them play is watching craftsmen.

Northern Pride v Tweed Seagulls

The Pride are up against Tweed and don’t bring too much form into the game. When they played earlier this season it was 66-0 and Tweed will be hoping to replicate that performance.

Against the Blackhawks last week it was 34-0 at half-time. Ryan Flegler made 30 tackles trying to stop the bleeding but it was just a band-aid to massive defensive issues.

Mackay Cutters v Burleigh Bears

The Cutters will be keen to knock off the Bears, who are on the same points as the Cutters. When that's the case, these are the games you have to win.

The Cutters lost to the Capras last week 44-30 in a high-scoring game.

It was 14-14 at half-time and that is what will disappoint the Cutters.

Flynn Camilleri was strong in attack with 147 run metres and one try.

The Bears were on the end of a high scoring game too; 26 points will win you nearly every game but not when you let the other team score 32.

The Bears are similar to the Cutters and will be disappointed they let that slip through. Ben Kay worked hard without the ball for the Bears with 30 tackles.

Central Queensland Capras v Norths Devils

The Capras are in fourth and this is a danger game.

The Tigers are two points behind them so can pull up beside the Capras if they get the win and the Capras slip up.

It took the a while to get moving against the Cutters, but when they did they applied attacking pressure and the Cutters couldn’t go with them. Five second half tries and 30 second half points saw them get the win.

Matthew Hill climbed up a 171-metre hill to record massive numbers and Owen Pattie made 38 tackles.

Norths Devils were savage and unrelenting against the Souths Logan Magpies and racked up 52 points in the game.

From the third minute until the 77th the Devils were unstoppable.

Angus Hinchey was great again with 222 run metres and is a great attacker for the Devils on the edge with one try to go with all the ground he won.

Souths Logan Magpies v Redcliffe Dolphins

The Magpies lost 52-10 and suffered an injury blow when Cup hooker Blake Mozer only lasted 30 minutes and then had a shoulder complaint.

The Magpies started well with a try to Callum Eggerling, who also made 36 tackles.

The Dolphins went down narrowly to the Wynnum Seagulls 36-28.

The Dolphins will be happy with their attack that netted five tries but not so happy with the defence that let in six. The Dolphins did everything right but win the game.
