Rubys and Sapphires: 'Bring it on, definitely bring it on'

The Queensland Rubys and Queensland Sapphires will compete for glory at the Harvey Norman Women's National Championships from May 18.

Games kick off at UAA Park at Burleigh on Thursday, with the final games to be played on Sunday.

The Queensland Rubys were Harvey Norman Under 19 National Championships title winners at last year's tournament.

The young Queenslanders are all looking to put their best foot forward with Harvey Norman Queensland Maroons coach and QRL female pathways manager Tahnee Norris watching closely to select the Queensland Under 19 side to play New South Wales in July.

All of the girls got together last weekend to train prior to joining camp for next week's tournament and both coaches were happy with what they saw.

Queensland Rubys coach Veronica White said her side were "pretty dynamic together".

"A lot of them have played alongside each other at school. And through the rep system," White said.

"They connect really well and can take on each other's criticisms as well, so they work really well as a unit.

"Even with the new girls coming through, some pretty experienced rep girls in there... some with NRLW experience. They all know they're highly skilled and they're all pretty well in terms of physique.

"I'm looking forward to seeing how they go throughout the tournament."

Queensland Sapphires coach Chelsea Baker said "the Sapphires as a whole are outstanding... got to love the country kids".

"They're coming together really well," Baker said.

"We've got nobody sitting on their haunches and sitting back; everyone's digging in and doing their job.

"They're a really well behaved group, all polite, a really great group of girls.

"Fingers crossed we're a bit better than last year and stay a bit more injury-free than last year, but I'm really, really excited for the whole thing.

"Bring it on, definitely bring it on."
