Hastings Deering Colts Round 14 preview

The Burleigh Bears will go to Wynnum Manly this week for the third last instalment of the Hasting Deering Colts before finals, in a blockbuster battle between second place and seventh place.

The Bears have now won eight games in a row and have stars all over the field.

Adam Christensen has been a force out wide for the Bears. He has missed the last two games but is due back this week raring to go.

Before his injury, Christensen was scoring tries for fun. He ran for 208 metres in Round 2 and 213 metres in Round 8.

Bears coach Roy Leoni has been impressed by Christensen.

“He has been 18th man a few times and I know (Hostplus Cup coach) Luke Burt is having a close look at him,” Leoni said.

“He’s having a great year and was playing local football on the Coast last season.”

Centre Cruz Lasike became the second player to score five tries in a Colts game in Round 11. A week earlier he ran for 239 metres in a win over Tweed.

Boston Tagg has played both five-eighth and halfback throughout the season and has been crucial in Burleigh’s current winning run that has seen them land in  second spot on the ladder.

Tagg kicked eight from eleven against the Pride to take his tally to 90 points and third most in the Colts competition.

“They are two players who have done a lot of learning this year and they were locals too last season but they have found their way and been great for us," Leoni said.

“We know Wynnum are strong, they always are, and we also know that after this we have Tweed and Townsville so they are all strong, finals teams.

“We need to turn up with that finals attitude.”

The Bears were dominant from the first minute until the 79th against the Pride last week.

Jesse Tu'inukuafe scored the Bears' first try in the first minute and that set the tone for the day.

The Bears did everything right with 78 tackle breaks and nine line breaks that all culminated in 10 tries.

The Bears' offloading game was a thing of beauty.

In defence, just 21 missed tackles will win you plenty of football games and that’s what the Bears will be hoping for this week again.

Samuel McIntyre scored a try and made 21 tackles while Phillip Hakaraia-Ngamotu ran 180 metres and Kedan Chan-Tung made two line breaks.

It was a finals-worthy performance that will bring a smile to the face of the Bears.

While Wynnum Manly won’t be happy with last week's loss to Sunshine Coast, they will look to bounce back in true Seagulls style this week and show plenty of resilience against the Bears.

Wynnum Manly always seem to respond to challenges.

Against the Falcons, the Seagulls lost 25-18. The first thing the Seagulls will be aiming to fix is the fact they only had 47 per cent of the ball.

If they can even that up, then it will give players like Blake Anders - who is the Seagulls' top try scorer with 10 tries - more ball, as well as centre Sefa Roache-Faimalo, who has run for over 200 metres four times, in Rounds 1, 2, 6 and 12.

Cooper Hewett defended all day against the Falcons and finished with 44 tackles while Jeremy Trappett made 178 metres.

Wynnum Manly will be looking to forward leader and prop John Radel to make sure the middle is tight in defence. Radel has been great for Wynnum topping the tackle count five times.

Round 14 will kick off with the Western Clydesdales playing host to Norths Devils.

Competition leaders Tweed will then look to stay on top of the ladder when they take on the Northern Pride at Piggabeen Sports Complex on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Sunshine Coast Falcons will meet the Ipswich Jets.

The Central Queensland Capras will meet Townsville Blackhawks.

Then in the final match on Saturday, the Brisbane Tigers will meet the Souths Logan Magpies in a top eight battle at Totally Workwear Stadium.

Mackay Cutters and Redcliffe Dolphins will enjoy a bye this week.
