BRL preview: Panthers face Diehards in sudden death final

Round 12 on June 24 was the last time West Brisbane Panthers clashed with Valleys Diehards at Frank Lind Oval.

That game was for three competition points. This game from 3pm Saturday is for survival.

Valleys have lost both encounters, Round 3 at Emerson Park, 22-18 and last start 32-12 at Mitchelton.

Valleys finished in fifth place on 40 points, while the Panthers were equal with the Seagulls and Roosters who were second and third respectively on 42, but dropped to fourth on account of for and against.

There is no doubting that this will be won in the middle and it's discipline that will be the key.

The Panthers and Diehards ‘gatherings’ have always been a feisty affair with no quarter given. Both squads will need the scoreboard to do the talking.

It's easier said than done with the likes of Panthers firebrands Sam Collins, Bryn Callaghan and James Flack smashing into Cody Payne, James Antonio and Tauaalo Vaipulu happy to return the favour.

Across town and coming home strong is the Roosters who will meet the Seagulls at John Fredricks Oval, Capalaba in the 4.30pm qualifying final.

All the talk has been around Brighton’s resurgence with eight wins in a row and undefeated for the second half of the season.

The winner will meet minor premiers Bulimba, while the loser will play the winner of the elimination final to stay alive.

The Roosters will hope they can produce a repeat of their Round 14 performance when they defeated Wynnum Manly Juniors 26-16 as they again come up against the Seagulls.

This is the first foray into finals football for Brighton, while the Seagulls have won three titles and played in all finals since the reintroduction of BRL A Grade in 2015.

Flockbuster? You bet. Wynnum Manly Juniors have talent and experience across the park. Nathan Ward, James Robinson and Tim Tupou are just a few Seagulls whose big game outings will be again called upon.

Brighton will fancy taking down the Seagulls with their own brand of football.

The Roosters' spine is electrifying. Maleek Sandow, Logan Cox and Brock Kehl have created a match winning formula based around the rest of the Roosters flock.
