Next weekend will see close to 130 young athletes from some of Far North Queensland’s most remote regions venture to Cairns for the 2025 RISE remote carnival.
The RISE program seeks to provide a pathway beyond community rugby league for aspiring players aged 13-17, as well as coaches wanting to advance their knowledge of the game and player development.
This year’s RISE remote carnival will welcome players from areas including Weipa, Cooktown, Mt Isa, Thursday Island and Palm Island.
Rachael Morgan, the League and Club coordinator for the Cape and Torres, is excited for the knowledge and opportunities that this camp will provide talented players from remote regions.
“This year will be the second RISE remote carnival we’ve done, having conducted smaller camps within some of the more remote regions in the area,” Said Morgan.
“The great thing about this carnival is that it isn’t solely about rugby league,
“We’re placing a lot of importance this year on players building friendships and connections away from home, allowing them opportunities and experiences which they otherwise would not have been able to have.”
The Carnival will take place at Jones Park Sporting Complex over the 19th and 20th of July, with players unavailable for the Northern Pride’s Round 18 team expected to be involved in an assisting capacity.
Further investment in the remote areas of FNQ has been a key point of focus for Queensland Rugby League, with the RISE program a key facilitator in allowing the best talent in the remote northern regions a clear pathway into the Hostplus Cup and NRL.
