Dolphins and Magpies prepare for next chapter

The Redcliffe Dolphins and Souths Logan Magpies have played some classic matches over many decades.

Take as far back as 1981 for instance, when the clock is ticking down.

One minute to go and the Magpies are behind the Dolphins 9-8. It's the last tackle of the game and it's looking like Arthur Beetson will get his Dolphins’ premiership.

Enter Chris Phelan, Mal Meninga and Mick Reardon. A somersaulting Reardon scores in the corner and the Magpies win 13-9 in a famous decider.

The Magpies celebrated their first premiership since 1953 and Meninga had stood up on the big stage after losing in 1979 and 1980.

Sunday’s dose of drama will struggle to match the 1981 decider, but the expectation is always high when these two meet.

The last two times that the Dolphins and Magpies have clashed it’s been high scoring with the Magpies winning 30-24; and earlier in 2025 the Dolphins won 36-22.

Both teams bring in good winning form with the Dolphins winning four of their last five and the Magpies winning three of their last five.

Redcliffe have won two of the last three games between these two sides, and two of the last three at Davies Park.

When it comes to attack it is pretty even with the Dolphins having scored just eight more points than the Magpies, but in defence it’s all the Dolphins with 135 fewer points scored against them.

The Dolphins are coming off a resounding win over their other arch enemy the Wynnum Manly Seagulls in a brutal shut down.

Six tries to two and the Dolphins kept the Seagulls scoreless for 68 minutes of the match.

The Dolphins only missed 10 tackles in a huge defensive shove in the right direction.

The Josh James kicking game decided when and where the Seagulls got the ball and a lot of time, they were trucking it back off their line with no chance of getting to an attacking position.

Trai Fuller was outstanding at the back, sneaking down blind sides and setting up plays and finishing with 208 metres of Kayo Stadium ground won by the Dolphins’ fullback.

The Magpies beat the Norths Devils 20-14 at Davies Park last week in a tight contest.

Magpies recruit Billy Walters was playing his 90th Hostplus Cup game and first for the Magpies.

Coming back from a partial ACL tear, Walters got through 60 minutes and will likely suit up again for the Magpies looking to prove he can slot back in for the Broncos as soon as ready.

Walters scored a typical fighting try on the right and stepped inside and twisted and burrowed over to get the Magpies off to a great start.

It will be halves partner Anthony Milford’s 50th Hostplus Cup game and 31st for the Magpies in that 50.

Milford will be everywhere for the Magpies and he’s perfect for the Walters come back because he takes so much pressure off him.

Milford is at the controls of the Magpies, doing all the kicking and sets himself up on the left-hand side.

The Magpies first try against the Devils was a Walters and Milford passing combination that resulted in Mitchell Owen scoring on the left-hand side.

Sunday's feature match, presented by National Storage, will be broadcast live and free on Qplus.tv, Kayo and 9Now.
