THE Tweed Heads Seagulls continued their winning ways at the weekend, putting on a strong performance at home to defeat the Souths Logan Magpies 32-16.
As good as the Seagulls were however, the Magpies had an afternoon many of their players would rather forget – with errors cruelling any chance of them applying any consistent pressure.
According to the QRL’s statistician, Souths Logan only had a 55% completion rate in the first half – and that figure told, with Tweed Heads going into the break boasting a comfortable 22-6 lead.
The game itself had also started well for the Seagulls, who posted the opening try when winger Tom Merritt crossed the line, bringing his season tally to league-leading 11 so far.
However, the Magpies were also able to score early, with forward Andrew Edwards putting his side on the board.
The rest of the half though saw the Seagulls dominate, with Chris Piper, James Roberts and Jamal Fogarty all adding to the total.
The points continued to come for the home side in the second half, with Blake Anderson benefitting from another Magpies error to score a try for himself.
Featuring nine Raiders in the team, the Magpies were eventually able to hit back, with youngsters Patrick Mago (a Souths Logan junior) and Brenko Lee crossing to give the visitors back-to-back tries and to narrow the margin to 26-16.
However, the fight back was short-lived, with Fogarty getting a double to further increase their lead on the Seagulls’ way to their fifth win in a row.
This weekend, Tweed Heads will host the Sunshine Coast while the Magpies will travel to PNG to take on the Hunters at Kokopo.
