The Stanthorpe Rugby League will celebrate 40 years as the “Gremlins” on Saturday, July 19, 2014.

Rugby league started in Stanthorpe way back in 1919. Since that time, locals have seen many changes to the game in their small community. The last major change occurred back in 1974 when the club changed their name to the ‘Stanthorpe Gremlins’.

The Stanthorpe Gremlins are a very unique club as they are the only known sporting club in Australia with this logo and emblem as their name. The club also came into being prior to the famous Steven Spielberg movie “Gremlins” in 1981!

The Stanthorpe Junior Gremlins club competes in the Warwick & District Junior Rugby League competition and the Stanthorpe Senior Gremlins club competes in the Border Rugby League in the QRL Central Division. Stanthorpe is situated approximately 2.5hrs drive south west of Brisbane.

Celebrations on July 19 will include junior and senior league games on the Saturday starting at 9.00am and concluding around 4.30pm, followed by a Charity Dinner/Fundraiser starting at 6.30pm at the local Civic Centre in the evening.

Master of Ceremonies will be highly regarded Courier Mail columnist and past Qld referee, Bernie Pramberg. The night will feature guest speakers including Barry Muir and past Gremlins player Mick Hancock, along with memorabilia and jersey auctions and raffles.

Funds raised will be used to assist with the construction of their new dressing rooms and amenities for players and patrons at the playing facility. Celebrations will also promote the wonderful game of rugby league, and especially the Stanthorpe Gremlins club. It will also allow the club to celebrate 40 years of existence and to bring together and reunite as many past players, coaches and supporters as possible. They anticipate an audience of 300-400 guests at the dinner.

The Stanthorpe Gremlins would welcome any past junior and senior players and supporters of the club to “come home” to celebrate this important milestone.

Tickets to the Charity Dinner on the Saturday evening are $50 per person and include a two course meal.

Tickets are available by phoning 4681 0909.
