The Burleigh Bears have continued their eye-catching run of form with a 43-0 win over the Northern Pride at Barlow Park.
Match: Pride v Bears
Round 10 -
Venue: Barlow Park, Cairns
With six consecutive wins, the Bears have shot up into second place on the Intrust Super Cup ladder, with only the unbeaten Sunshine Coast Flacons ahead of them.
Burleigh’s attack has been sizzling in recent weeks, and they were on song again as they ran in another eight tries, while also maintaining their standing as the competition’s best defensive team by holding the opposition scoreless for the second game in a row.
Burleigh got on the board early with a penalty goal, before Pat Politoni delivered two big plays to get the Bears rolling.
First, he nailed a 40/20 to give the Bears attacking position, and then capitalised on it himself by ducking over from dummy half for the first try of the day in the 13th minute.
The right-hand side of the field came alive in the 26th, with Jamal Fogarty putting Hayden Schwass through a hole. Kurtis Rowe loomed in support and suddenly the Bears had a comfortable 14-0 lead.
Burleigh went back-to-back with Fogarty slicing through and doing it all himself in the 29th minute, as the Bears stretched their advantage to three converted tries.
A heads-up field goal from Politoni gave the visitors a 19-0 lead at the break.
It didn’t take long for Burleigh to continue to onslaught, as Josh Ailaomai fed a short ball to Josh Rogers who scored just three minutes after play resumed.
A freakish piece of play led to Burleigh’s next try, as Fogarty grubbered behind the line in the 47th minute.
Tyronne Roberts-Davis chased hard and got an awkward bounce. Roberts-Davis threw his left hand out behind his body in traffic and reeled in the ball to score a miraculous try.
The points kept coming in the 58th minute with Sami Sauiluma throwing his weight around and carrying three defenders over the line on the left.
Dylan Phythian made a return from injury via the bench in the second half, and he quickly made an impact by putting Jacob Hind through a hole in the 68th minute.
Hind was rounded up by the defence, but two plays later Phythian threw a loose cut out pass that hit the ground, but still put Brenko Lee into space as he moved the ball on to Roberts-Davis who scored his second in the corner.
Fogarty fired a trick-shot in the 77th minute, as he chipped towards the middle of the field looking for Rowe who ran past the ball, but it bounced away from the defenders as well and he recovered the ball anyway.
The Burleigh Bears will host the CQ Capras in Round 11.
