#WellbeingWednesday: Meditation, mindfulness and gratitude

Welcome to another episode of Queensland Rugby League's #WellbeingWednesday series, providing handy tips and helpful advice to improve overall wellness.

Each Wednesday, Luke Archer, from QRL's wellbeing and education team, covers a hot topic people may need some further guidance on. This week, it's all about meditation, mindfulness and gratitude.

#WellbeingWednesday: Meditation, mindfulness, gratitude

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is all about "being mindful and in the present moment". Day to day, it is very easy to think too much about the past, and get down, or too much about the future, and get anxious.

It is really important, for your general wellbeing, to do things that help make you feel present; where you can focus on your thoughts, feelings, movement and surrounding environment in the moment.

This can be done by going for a surf, getting out into nature, going for a mountain bike ride, playing with your children or throwing a ball around with your dog.

Meditation

Meditation is all about clearing your mind of any thoughts, sometimes through breathing or focusing on a particular object, to achieve a mentally clear, calm and stable state.

Meditation can help reduce stress and anxiety and enhance self-awareness.

Mediation is something that can practised daily to get better at. At first, your mind may drift, but it is important to be gentle with yourself as you train yourself to meditate. Pull your mind back to your breathing and you will be meditating successfully in no time.

Gratitude

With a lot happening around world, it is important to be grateful what you have in your life, instead of what you do not. Think about what you are grateful for.

Every night write three things down: your highlight of the day, what you are grateful for and what you learned.

This will help you recognise and acknowledge what you are grateful for.
