Statewide score wrap: Easts nestle minor premiership title in Bundaberg

With only two rounds remaining until the finals, the Eastern Suburbs Magpies have secured the minor premiership in Bundaberg's A Grade Premiership race, sitting five points clear of next best Wests Panthers.

The Brent Kuskey-coached side have only lost two games all season - to Brothers and Wests in consecutive weeks - but since those two blights in Round 4 and Round 5 (and a draw in Round 3), the Magpies have swooped on the rest of the competition, winning the last eight matches in a row to wrap up top spot.

The Panthers are on track to earn a second chance come finals time, but Past Brothers are hotly on their heels, only two points behind in the final weeks.

The Carina Tigers went down to the Valleys Diehards at Leo Williams Oval in last Saturday night's Round 13 fixture... it's not for the first time the Tigers have come so close to a win but only to be pipped at the final hurdle.

Round 3 had them leading with 30 seconds remaining to eventually go down to the Seagulls (32-28) after the previous round's nail-biter against Beenleigh (going down 28-26).

Carina’s only win for the season was against Valleys in Round 4.

Earlier in the day, the Normanby Hounds once again put 50 points on the board against Beenleigh with a 58-18 win after also taking the points in Round 4. Dray Nguatere-Wroe and Clayton Uia scored three tries each.

For Normanby, it was a comprehensive win as the Pride posted two of those tries in the final 10 minutes. They remain undefeated at the top of the ladder.

Second-placed Wynnum Manly flexed their muscle against Pine Rivers with a comprehensive 48-10 win.

Lazurus Vaalepu and Rahkeem Auda crossed for a double each as the Bears had no answer to the high-flying Seagulls who have only the one defeat this season.

For the Bears, it was their third-straight loss as they cling on to a top five spot.

The Brighton Roosters have been menacing opponents in recent weeks however the Panthers would have none of that for the majority of the game.

West Brisbane mauled the Roosters in the opening quarter to jump to a 28-0 lead but Brighton hit back in second half to trail 30-24; but speed men Brandon Downey and Reece Ketu scored a double for the Panthers to eventually run out winners 42-24.

Bundaberg Broadcasters Premiership

Contributed by QRL Bundaberg correspondent Vince Habermann

A couple of pieces of the Bundaberg Broadcasters A Grade Premiership puzzle were locked in following Saturday’s Round 13 results with Easts Magpies claiming the minor premiership with two rounds to go, toughing out a 30-20 victory over a valiant Hervey Bay Seagulls at Salter Oval.

Waves Tigers took an iron grip on fifth place as well as the last finals berth and ended Wests Panthers’ quest to be number one with a massive upset over them, prevailing 26-18 with high-class fullback Layton Chambers a match-winner with five goals.

Wests remain in second position and are guaranteed a top-three finish. However, they could be edged out for second spot, depending on results of the last two rounds, as they are now just two points in advance of reigning champions Past Brothers, who shored up third spot and sealed a place in the finals with a 38-18 dispatch of their hosts Wallaroos in Maryborough. The Roos now need a miracle if they are to avoid the wooden spoon.

The Seagulls remained in fourth place with a top-five finish secured with 11 points, and sit behind Easts 21, Wests 16 and Brothers 14, but are now just one ahead of Waves, with Wallaroos on six points. Their only chance to clinch third and a double-chance in the play-offs is to beat Wests at home and Wallaroos in their remaining fixtures, and for Brothers to lose to Easts and Waves.

Hervey Bay matched Easts in all departments on Saturday, but the Magpies established a 10-point buffer with hooker Arden Lankowski darting over from dummy-half for his second try and captain Matt Craven converting in the 68th minute. From there, they defended stoutly, despite continuing to turn the ball over as the clock ticked away.

Powerhouse Magpies centre Trent Seeds also notched a double, taking his tally to 11 in their past seven games and lifting his season haul to 12, now just three behind Craven on the leading try scorer list.

Craven was also overtaken in the top points scorer stakes by Chambers, who took his total to 122, four more than the Magpies’ reigning BRL player of the year.

Chambers continued his outstanding form for Waves, but all their four tries were scored by rugged forwards, including former long-serving Easts champions, battering ram front rower Ross Larsen and inspirational captain Reece Maughan, and Melbourne Storm-contracted Coby Gibbs.

For Wests, electrifying five-eighth and rookie centre Daniel Clancy also grabbed doubles, but after looking invincible early in the season, they have now lost four of their past seven starts, and apart from Easts, who have now won eight in a row, there appears little between the other top four sides.

On the other hand, Wallaroos again gave it their best shot on Saturday, but they slumped to their sixth-straight loss and their fourth successive home defeat as the Brethren beat them by a similar margin for the third time in 2021, with barnstorming young front rower Brendan Stewart and flashy centre Klint Beer - in just his second game of the season - leading the charge with two tries each.
