BMD Premiership Round 5 Sunday wrap: Souths Logan, Wynnum Manly make huge statements

The Souths Logan Magpies remain as the only undefeated team of the BMD Premiership, while Wynnum Manly Seagulls have made a huge statement to wrap up Round 5 of the competition.

The Magpies stamped their authority as the 2023 leaders, claiming a massive scalp in a big way at Davies Park on Sunday with a win over the Burleigh Bears.

The top-of-the-table clash saw Souths Logan run away with an astounding 44-16 victory, with Magpies winger Kalisi Longopoa nabbing four tries.

It was a massive win for Souths Logan, who were previously only separated from Burleigh on the ladder by four for-and-against points.

And they were not the only team to make an impact on Sunday, with Wynnum Manly showing they are gearing up for finals footy with a dominant display over Tweed Seagulls in the 'flockbuster'.

Up 10-6 at halftime, Wynnum Manly put on five tries to one in the second stanza to take home the two points to strengthen their place in the top four.

Backrower Shaniah Power said she can see her team developing every week, particularly in defence and communication.

She said that was evident again today, particularly in the first half when Wynnum Manly dug deep to hold Tweed out for numerous repeat sets, only to then score through Lilly Green as soon as they got the ball back.

"The game started off a bit rocky but well into that second half where we were just completing a bit more of our sets and with more communication in defence, we were able to really hold them out," Power said of her team's performance.

"In that first half a couple of times there, we were backed up on our tryline. We had really good communication, backed each other up and we did really well to keep them out, so that’s a real big props to our girls at Wynnum.

"We’ve done this to ourselves every week where we’ve had to defend three or four sets in a row but we all had really good comms this week and held them out, which is really good."

Power, who was leading the Steph Hancock BMD Premiership Player of the Year tally ahead of Round 5, said her own form this season has come about from the support she has found at Wynnum Manly.

She was a standout once again today - scoring one try for her efforts - as was centre Julia Robinson.

Robinson proved too hard to handle for Tweed on multiple occasions.

"I always have to give it back to Robbo," Power said of Robinson.

"She’s just such a leader, the way she defends and the way she carries the ball, she’s so fearless.

"When we need her, she comes through and gets those really great metres for us. She just makes 30, 40 metre runs to get us back in our half and give us really good field position.

"You couldn’t ask for more from a leader like her."

Wynnum Manly will look to continue their winning streak when they meet Burleigh in Round 6, who will be hurting after their loss to Souths Logan.

The Magpies meanwhile will come up against Tweed at Piggabeen next Saturday.
