BRL Round 5 preview: Valleys march on, flockbuster beckons

Brighton Roosters will host the Wynnum Manly Seagulls in the 'flockbuster' by the bay at Jim Lawrie Oval on Saturday at 6pm.

Brighton couldn’t cross the line last start but looked dangerous when in possession.

The home side has some lethal weapons with 'angry man' Samson Graham leading the way. Graham caused havoc last week, and with Matthew Gill and Jake Fowler, the side will be hoping to keep 'Castle le Rooster' the not-so-happy place for visiting teams.

Wynnum Manly had their first loss and will not be happy to repeat that against the tricolours.

The Seagulls had one player sin-binned and another sent off in their last start loss to Valleys and will want to avoid getting their feathers ruffled again.

Wynnum Manly's entire forward pack are very ordinary on the dance floor as they have no step, just straight forward. The result is carnage up the middle.

Top of the table Valleys play the first game on the slate at 3pm, heading to Leo Williams Oval to take on the Tigers.

They too suffered with two sin-bins from ill-discipline last week but can be very happy with their returns so far this season.

Carina regained some form in a 70-point score fest against the Pride last time out.

Although they had a two-point loss (36-34) there will be some confidence gained from winning away from home.

Carina’s Tom McGrath crossed for a double last week and with mobile fellow back rowers Cameron Torpy, Josh Colls and Callum Rigby hungry to join the try-scorer’s ledger they will have to contend with Valleys and their try greedy spine of Benton Leme Pyako, Pemulway Yanner and Reed Young.

Carina, with only one win, will be searching for a much-needed win at home.

Bulimba will host Beenleigh at Balmoral from 3.15pm. The Bulldogs couldn’t break the deadlock with an 18-18 draw with the Magpies last start while the Pride held on for a two-point win.

The battle of the halves will be front and centre as the majestic Hayden Herbert and boy wonder Bradley Russell from the kennel will dance off against twinkle toes LJ Waddups and the elusive David Quinlan from the den.

Throw in fullback Tahj Wood and Tyler Han and you should see the scorers earn their volunteer dollars this weekend.

Pine Rivers are in a world of hurt at the moment after posting a fourth loss. The Bears will be sounding out Austin Powers in search of their mojo as they look for a win at Mathieson Park from 4.30pm against the Magpies.

The Bears have man child George Fai, rampaging Takai Tikinau and Michael Talbot to throw at the cycle swoopers from the magpie nest.

Souths Juniors have their own wrecking balls in Aotealofa Tuimavave, Emmanuael Tuimavave-Gerrard and Cuba Bay Tuhe Tahiti to cause grief.

With the weekend off the following week both camps will be looking to take the win into the pause of the competition for the XXXX Chairman’s Challenge.

Bert St Claire Oval, home of The Hounds, will host reigning premiers West Brisbane from 6pm.

The Panthers had a solid and exhausting win over Brighton (14-0) while the Hounds did much easier over the Bears (40-4) last start.

West Brisbane will need to contain the likes of Mitchell Hallinan, Kingstimer Paraia and Jezzy Ioane if the look to make it four wins in a row.

West Brisbane’s fullback Kyle Van Klaveren showed glimpses of brilliance after his first start last week. Add the return of Jye Ballinger and the earthquaker Charlie Galo to the mix and it could well be a win to the mud and blood.
