Round 1 of the Hastings Deering Colts competition brought plenty of points, as teams made their opening statements for 2023.

With Burleigh Bears and Central Queensland Capras enjoying byes, there were six games played across the weekend in the under 21s division, with attacking flair on show.

Here is a wrap of Round 1 of the Hastings Deering Colts.

Game of the week

The opening round of Hastings Deering Colts was a high scoring one, with teams bursting out of the gates to get the year started.

The closest match of the round went to the Sunshine Coast Falcons and Souths Logan Magpies who met on Sunday at Sunshine Coast Stadium, with the home team notching up a 30-16 victory.

The Falcons raced out to a 14-0 lead within the opening 20 minutes, before forward Caleb Evans got the Magpies on the board to send the game into halftime at 14-6.

Souths Logan skipper Max Pakai continued the momentum after the break, bringing the Magpies within striking distance at 14-12.

But this was the closest the match would be, with Sunshine Coast going on a second half rampage, banking three tries within the space of 15 minutes to secure the Round 1 win.

Souths Logan got a late consolation try through five-eighth Byron Johnson, but the Falcons already had the two points in hand.

Five-eighth Corey Herdegen - who has been training with the Cup squad - was influential in the win and scored two tries for his efforts, as did centre Pat McGinn.

The 14-point differential puts the two teams in the middle of the ladder, alongside Burleigh Bears and Central Queensland Capras, who both enjoyed a bye.

Mover of the week

The Redcliffe Dolphins already had plenty to celebrate over the weekend, with an Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup grand final victory.

But the older generation also put on a show, with the under 21s Dolphins notching up a huge win.

Last year's grand finalists, Redcliffe made a massive statement in the opening round with a 70-16 victory over the Ipswich Jets, putting them in first spot on the ladder.

Tweed Seagulls also caused a big upset, taking down the reigning premiers, Townsville Blackhawks in Townsville.

The Seagulls made quite the impact up north with a convincing 34-6 scoreline, with winger Malakhi Donovan bagging a hat-trick to get his side in the winner's circle.

Shout outs

The Dolphins piled on 70 points in their Round 1 showing in an outstanding team effort. Five-eighth Corey Thomas and centre Michael Roberts both nabbed a hat-trick each while impact player Ayden Hoad and rake Taniela Otukolo both found doubles through the middle.

Elsewhere, Donovan scored a hat-trick for Tweed as did backrower Hugh Arthur for the Mackay Cutters in their strong opening win over the Norths Devils.
