Hastings Deering Colts Round 2 preview

Six Hastings Deering Colts team enjoyed wins in Round 1, including a massive win by Redcliffe Dolphins and Tweed Seagulls upsetting 2022 grand finalists Townsville Blackhawks.

The Dolphins were particularly dominant in Round 1; while one game is a small sample size, it’s hard to ignore a 70-16 win.

The Dolphins scored 13 tries against Ipswich Jets; eight of them were coming home to end the game. From 32-12 at half-time, the game was over and from there with Redcliffe putting the pedal to the metal until the end.

With 60 per cent of the ball, 66 more runs, and 787 more run metres, with 13 line breaks and 65 tackle breaks, the Dolphins may have peaked in Round 1 with this performance.

Forcing the opposition to make 91 more tackles is a good way to score tries when you have the ball and that’s exactly what the Dolphins did to the Jets.

It’s hard to pin down the Dolphins' best but when you score three tries you’re always going to be in the running and Redcliffe had two players achieve that feat.

Michael Roberts made four line breaks and scored three tries and Corey Thomas got the party started in the second minute.

Jak Goulding made a huge 207 run metres with the front row unable to be contained by anyone.

Dolphins coach Scott Murray thinks Redcliffe can still improve.

“It may look like we can’t if you look at the score but I was in this position a few years ago, we won Round 1 by 70 and then lost Round 2,” Murray said.

“We need to tighten up our defence because the Falcons are a good side that will test you. They are coming off a good win.

“We had so long to prepare for Round 1, so now week two is the harder game you have seven days to be ready.”

This week it will be the Falcons that have to analyse and figure out how to bring down the Dolphin giant. The Dolphins last played the Falcons in the finals and Redcliffe won 30-16 and 42-12 before that.

The Falcons are coming off an impressive 30-16 win over the Souths Logan Magpies. The Falcons defended strongly and made good use of the little bit of ball they did have throughout the game.

Corey Herdegen was involved in everything scoring two tries and kicking three goals. The Falcons' best two forwards were Blake Woodford, who was tireless in the front row, and hooker Blake Ginman.

Ginman topped the tackle count in the middle with 30 and Woodford made 151 metres for the Falcons.

The Falcons have two forward leaders right there who will take it to the Dolphins.

Elsewhere in Round 2, Norths Devils will take on Northern Pride.
