Statewide score wrap: Cult figure raises the roof on ladies day

They didn't get the win in the top grade this weekend, but it would be hard to find someone who didn't leave Fassifern Bombers' clubhouse without a smile on Saturday.
The Ipswich Jets A Grade Cup club hosted their Ladies Day this weekend for club personnel and community members alike, with A grade players wearing pink jerseys during the 22-16 defeat against Swifts Bluebirds.
The pink jerseys were later auctioned off to go towards fundraising for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, which is set to raise about $8000.
"Crowd favourite" Charlie Christensen's jersey went for more than $2000 on its own, which surprised the mullet-repping second rower.
"Playing in the pink jersey, everyone sort of picked up their game a bit and even though we went down on the scoreboard, it was a good game of football," he said.
"There was a really big hype around the whole day and after the game we got into the jersey auction and somehow I managed to get dragged back to last spot in the auction and obviously it was worth it in the end ... for an awesome cause."
Christensen said as a Fassifern junior he recognises the importance of the club to the surrounding towns and vice versa, making building the community feel as important as any on-field achievement.
"When we have a home game there's a massive following, one of the best in the Ipswich comp I reckon, we really draw a crowd from all around the Scenic Rim and we feel it on the field. It's awesome," he said.
Christensen, who represented Ipswich Diggers at the XXXX Chairman's Challenge, said there was a great vibe about the club particularly this year and felt the A grade team could take plenty of positives from their performance despite the loss to Swifts.
The Bombers went into halftime in front but couldn't hold on against the ladder leaders despite one of their best efforts so far this season.
"It was a top of the table clash and Swifts are a bit of a powerhouse in the competition and we knew we had to muscle up in the middle and we did that, we answered them well," Christensen said.
"We really held it tight in the middle but poor discipline got the best of us.
"We'll face them again, we know what we're up against and the ball is in our court to send a message to the competition.
"Unfortunately the score didn't reflect it, but we'll take a lot of positives out of it."
Fassifern Bombers seniors president Paul Roderick said the A grade result didn't take away from Ladies Day, which well exceeded expectations.
The club donated their entire gate takings to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and raised money from raffles, with many sponsors donating prizes to go with the jersey auction proceeds.
The Bombers' regular contingent of female volunteers were able to sit back as A grade players turned up early to give their time in the canteen and other areas to complement the catering offered on the day.
"We had a ladies lounge with cocktails and a lot of local businesses donated gift packs and other things for a Mother's Day raffle," Roderick said.
"The auction was huge. We had a local auctioneer come on board to auction them and it was really good.
"The boys, despite being disappointed, they came and modelled them and we auctioned them straight off the back."
Roderick said the club had more community initiatives in the works to contribute to the "more than football" vibe of the club, which is having a positive impact on player numbers.
"There's a few things we want to do this year to try to lift their horizons and make them better people rather than just good footballers," he said.
"We're definitely trying to make (going to the football) a must-do in the region and you have to do that by engaging the community."
Fassifern sits fourth in an incredibly tight Ipswich Jets A Grade Cup race after two wins and two losses and will look to get back to the winner's circle when they host Norths Tigers this weekend.
