Junior statewide competitions Round 4 preview

Round 4 of the junior statewide competitions will see the Harvey Norman Under 17s finish up their developmental season, while Cyril Connell Cup and Harvey Norman Under 19s tip over the halfway point.

Mal Meninga Cup

The last round of Mal Meninga Cup was all about momentum - some teams found ways to get it and not lose it.

The Sunshine Coast Falcons are having no trouble finding momentum in 2024 and have started the season with two wins.

On Sunday in the Mal Meninga Cup the Falcons will be at home to the Western Clydesdales.

The Falcons ran riot against the Wide Bay Bulls last week, winning 46-4 - it was 22-4 at halftime and the Falcons didn’t let the Bulls score a point after the 8th minute of the match.

The Falcons had 57 per cent of the ball and by every rugby league metric they were dominant - 13 line breaks, 58 tackle breaks, a set distance that went 36.7 metres, 16 missed tackles.

Clive McCormack scored three tries from three line breaks and Tyrell Hopkins made 205 metres running freely on the edge, causing mayhem and destruction.

Falcons coach Cam Boaza is looking forward to staying at home this week.

“Road trips are a bit of the unknown at this level and Wide Bay can play some tough footy,’’ Boaza said.

“We wanted to complete well and finish our sets well and they did that.

“We pushed a few passes and bombed a couple of tries but they worked hard to stay on the plan and had some good opportunities to score.

“This week against Toowoomba will be tough... they are coming off a loss to Ipswich.”

The Clydesdales will make the long trek to the Sunshine Coast with one win and one loss so far. They beat the Bulls but then lost to Ipswich in Ipswich.

Last week's 45 per cent possession rate will be high on the Clydesdales agenda to fix first. Ipswich made too much ground and that resulted in too many line breaks and points against.

The pressure on the Clydesdales defence was too much.

Harvey Norman Under 19

The Western Clydesdales' Harvey Norman Under 19s are coming off a great 22-8 win over the Ipswich Jets.

This week they will meet the Falcons, with the both teams in great form.

Mackenzie Zeller was terrific last week with 163 metres while on the other side of the ball Chelsea Middleton made 17 tackles.

The Falcons' form can’t be ignored either and they will want to bring that again this week.

The Falcons enjoyed a massive 54-0 win over the Bulls, with their defence outstanding. To keep them to zero was a massive effort and it’s hard to find any fault with the Falcons who had 67 per cent of the ball, 82 runs and 14 line breaks for 13 tries.

Sienna Wheeler and Takoda Thompson both scored two tries and Thompson made 209 metres.

Falcons coach Joshua Shuttlewood said he was most pleased with the team’s structure and how the group earned the right to play expansive attacking rugby league.

“We had a goal to keep the opposition to zero,’’ Shuttlewood said.

Cyril Connell Cup

The Townsville Blackhawks defied all football logic last week with only 46 per cent of the ball against Mackay, but they did the hard work to defend a 12-6 win.

The Cutters almost stole victory with a try late but the pleasing thing for the young Blackhawks was they held on.

Sitiveni Afu was outstanding and will be looking to repeat his efforts this week. With 149 metres, the big prop kept trucking it up in the wet and he doubled up in defence with 35 tackles.

The Pride are coming into Round 4 with a 28-18 loss to the Central Queensland Capras and won't want to put their defence under so much pressure this week.

They allowed too many offloads which meant too many double efforts and too much tackling.

When they tried to come back at the end, it was all too much to overcome.

Harvey Norman Under 17

The last game of the season for the youngest statewide combatants will see the Central Queensland Capras take on the Mackay Cutters.

Both teams are coming off wins and both teams have had one win.

The Capras would be very happy about what they produced against the Northern Pride, with 53 per cent of the ball, but it will be the completion rate and kicking game that will need improvement this week against the Cutters.

The Capras only got to a kick 53 per cent of the time.

It was the start of the game that won it for the Capras, with Central Queensland scoring the first three tries of the match. Edge forward Chanelle Williams opened the scoring early, followed by Maycee Brown’s two tries off the interchange bench.

Chanelle Williams made 161 metres and three line breaks while Alexis Bukowski made 30 tackles to top the count for the game.

“The improvement in our team’s intensity in defence and completion of our sets were very pleasing, and as a result, points went on the board,’’ said Capras coach Nikki Carpenter.

The Cutters meanwhile will be hoping for drier weather this week, but what they will want to replicate will be their hard start.

The Cutters scored the first two tries against the Blackhawks in Round 3 and this week against the fast-starting Capras could be the best 30 minutes of football all weekend.

Cianna Faulkner was terrific with her leadership and attack being a major part of the Cutters win.

Faulkner made 159 metres and 27 tackles.
