The Queensland University of Technology and the University of Queensland have announced their early premiership intentions in the opening round of the Universities Rugby League Queensland competition.
Playing in the traditional university league ANZAC Day double header, all four teams were part of respectful ANZAC Day commemorations to start each match at the Griffith University campus at Nathan.
In the first game, defending champions the University of Queensland Hounds were quick to assert their dominance over the visitors from the University of Sunshine Coast.
Kylan Lovai scored after just three minutes and the bullocking forward would add another in the second half as the Hounds ran away with it.
Callum Galvin, Michael Kelly, Patrick Robinson and Liam Hop Yek Dodds all scored for the Hounds, while Ned Pitkin gave the Spartans some joy with a try.
It was a tight contest in the second match, with a goal to Hayden Mehlert on halftime giving the Dragons a 16-14 lead over QUT.
But QUT stormed home in the second forty, Rhuprah Kombra scoring twice as the Trouts won 40-26.
Johnathan Ovia had given the Dragons some hope with his two tries in the first half.
In Round 2, Griffith will host the UQ Hounds, while the USC will travel to Bulimba to meet QUT.
