2026 XXXX 47th Battalion

The 2026 XXXX 47th Battalion Carnival celebrates the enduring connection between rugby league and military legacy. The event will commence on Saturday 25 April and conclude with finals action on Sunday 26 April at John McDonald Sports Complex, Toowoomba.

This year’s carnival follows a revised competition format, with three rounds played across the weekend. Both the men’s and women’s competitions will begin on Saturday, with matches scheduled at 9:30am, 11:00am, 12:30pm and 2:00pm, before the tournament concludes on Sunday with games at 9:00am and 10:30am.

Rugby league has a long history of bringing communities together, and this year’s carnival reflects the shared values of mateship, respect and service that unite rugby league participants and those who have served.

QRL Central Region manager Steve Price said the event would showcase the talent of some of the best players in community rugby league.

The beauty of this carnival is that it brings together emerging players, experienced leaders and future stars, all competing with pride, respect and intensity. Fans can expect a high-quality, fiercely competitive contest that honours the significance of the day and the jersey they’re wearing.

Price described volunteers, officials, families and supporters as “the heartbeat of the event”.

“The carnival is a true community effort, and the pride people take in contributing is what makes it so special,” he said.

“The players aren’t just competing for a result but representing something much bigger than themselves and helping carry that legacy forward."

Here are five things you need to know before tuning in.

1. It Represents History, Not Just Competition

The 47th Battalion Carnival exists to honour the soldiers of the 47th Battalion who served during World War I, many of whom were recruited from the regions represented in the carnival this weekend. Every part of the weekend is designed to create space for reflection, learning and respect, while celebrating values shared by soldiers and rugby league players alike: mateship, resilience, sacrifice and service.

2. The Teams Reflect Authentic Regional Legacy

In 2026, the carnival features four men’s teams and four women’s teams, each aligned directly with the historical recruitment areas of the 47th Battalion. Toowoomba & Southwest, Wide Bay, Capricornia and Sunshine Coast are represented across both competitions, reinforcing the genuine regional connection that underpins the event.

3. The Jerseys Are Earned and Carry Meaning

Each jersey worn across the weekend carries the names of the 737 soldiers who lost their lives while serving with the 47th Battalion. These jerseys cannot be purchased or reproduced and are only awarded through selection. Wearing the jersey is not about individual achievement, but about carrying responsibility, respect and legacy onto the field. Each player will be presented their jersey by current Australian Defence Force personnel.

4. ANZAC Day is Central to the Experience

Football does not come first on Saturday 25 April. All players and staff will attend the ANZAC Dawn Service at Mothers Memorial in Toowoomba before any matches are played. This moment of collective remembrance sets the tone for the entire carnival and reinforces that the connection between rugby league and military legacy is real, not symbolic.

5. It’s About Community Before Results

While premierships will be decided across three rounds of competition, the true strength of the 47th Battalion Carnival lies in its people. Players, volunteers, officials, families and supporters all play a role in bringing the event to life, with rugby league providing a shared platform for remembrance, education and reconnection.
