Biography

Steve Price represented Queensland Schoolboys from Toowoomba's Harristown State High in 1992, a year in which Harristown finished runners up in the nationwide, Commonwealth Bank Cup Schoolboys competition.

He played club football with Newtown Lions in Toowoomba and was signed by Canterbury Bankstown in 1993, making his top grade debut that year.

He came off the bench in the 36-12 loss to Canberra in the 1994 grand final, and scored a try in the 1995 decider, in which the Bulldogs beat Manly 17-4.

Price made his State of Origin debut for the Maroons, from the bench, in the 1998 series, which Queensland won. He played in the 1998 grand final, with Canterbury beaten by the Broncos.

At the end of the season, he played the first of his 16 Tests for Australia. Price was named captain of the Bulldogs in 2002, and won the Dally M award as Captain of the Year. He was also NRL Captain of the Year in 2004 and 2007.

Steve Price Origin highlights

In 2004, Price led the Bulldogs to an NRL grand final, but missed the game due to injury, and was later gifted a premiership ring by fellow Queenslander, Johnathan Thurston.

Price had gone out of his way to mentor Thurston, during bouts of homesickness, after Thurston moved to Sydney as a teenager.

In 2005, Price signed with the New Zealand Warriors, and played five seasons with the Auckland based club, before announcing his retirement. Price finished his career with 313 first grade appearances; 16 Tests for Australia and 28 Origins for Queensland.

Rugby league is my passion, I love the game and I love the sport.

Steve Price FOG #108

One of his finest moments came in the 2006 series, with Queensland having lost Game I and facing the prospect of losing four series in a row, for the first time. The Origin careers of veterans like Price, Petero Civoniceva and even skipper, Darren Lockyer, were on the line. But with Price and Civoniceva leading the way up front, Queensland won the remaining two games, and Price remained an Origin fixture until the end of the 2009 series, with Queensland having won four series in a row.

Price's brother-in-law, Brent Tate was player of the match in Origin III, 2006.

Price has a cane toad tattoo inked on the inside of his right bicep, above his Queensland Origin number, 108.

A bank teller when he first moved to Sydney, Price is highly qualified in in fields of commerce and administration, and served as football manager at Canterbury-Bankstown, before settling on the Sunshine Coast, where he has taken up a carpentry apprenticeship.

Price is a staunch supporter of the Men of League Foundation, and has worked for the FOGS, mentoring Indigenous youth.
