KEEPING up with the news on the Queensland Rugby League website has helped the Cairns Kangaroos take out this year’s coveted XXXX Club of the Week major prize.

The Kangaroos largely have administration manager Robert McDougall to thank for their win – with the club official submitting an entry after reading about the competition on the QRL website.

After considering the three major selection criteria of club community involvement, notable club performances and club culture and spirit; Robert put in an entry knowing the Kangaroos ticked all the boxes and much more.

Thanks to his submission, the Kangaroos have won: $5000 worth of food, beverage and entertainment for a function at their club where they will be officially recognised for their achievement.

The winner was selected by QRL management and Lion Management, who along with a Queensland Maroons player representative will attend their function early next year.

The XXXX Club of the Week competition has been established by the Queensland Rugby League and long-term sponsors XXXX to help reward senior clubs that are making a positive difference in their community.

At the launch of the competition earlier this year, XXXX Regional Director Damien Mori said he was pleased to be able to support Queensland senior rugby league clubs like the Kangaroos through initiative.

“Through our partnership with the QRL, we are delighted to assist clubs at a senior grassroots level in a variety of ways,” Mr Mori told QRL Media.

“The XXXX Club of the Week initiative forms part of this support for the clubs throughout Queensland.”

Cairns Kangaroos club president Kelvin Lesina was grateful for the support provided by XXXX to rugby league in the state.

“We have to thank XXXX for putting these things on – it’s great to see a northern club, a country club get this support,” Kelvin said.

“XXXX does a great job sponsoring the State of Origin team; and it is good to see what they do for grassroots clubs as well.”

The Kangaroos club have produced some great players over the years, including Queensland and Australia representative Justin Hodges.

See what the Kangaroos have to look forward to with a look back on 2013 winners St George.

This win caps a wonderfully successful year for the Roos – who claimed back-to-back A Grade premierships with their 37-18 win over the Innisfail Leprechauns.

“With our club, we go right through from juniors to seniors and this year, we had nine or 10 junior players who had come through the grades playing in our A Grade side in the grand final,” Lesina said.

“These are all one-club players.

While the players and coaches are face of the club; Lesina also praised the continued efforts of the club’s volunteers who helped make his club special.

“That’s what it is all about,” Lesina said. “Without volunteers, we haven’t got a club.”
