Round 2 preview - by Ethan James

Normanby Hounds v Valleys Diehards at Purtell Park, Friday 8pm

How good is it to have Valleys back? The Diehards’ supporters were out in full voice on home turf at Emerson Park last weekend and another contingent is expected to travel to Purtell Park. The blue and whites took a while to get going against West Panthers, but finished well in a strong team performance that featured seven individual try scorers.

They’ll have to keep a close eye on Normanby’s Ollie Olds and Rez Phillips in this match. The speedy half and workaholic prop are the two lynchpins for the Hounds, who currently sit last on the Struddy’s Sports pre-season ladder. Olds is obviously in the mind of Souths Logan Magpies coach Josh Hannay, having been named on an extended bench in the Intrust Super Cup.

Carina v Logan Brothers at Leo Williams Oval, Saturday 5pm

Brothers will be without star outside back Dallas Anderson in round two, with the centre called up to the ISC for Souths Logan after an eye catching performance last weekend. Anderson, who passed his 50 game ISC milestone in 2014, crossed for four tries in Brothers big win over Normanby. There could be some late changes to the Logan side –prop Sinamu Crichton has been also named on an extended Magpies bench.

Carina were outplayed by Easts Tigers in round one but fought back in a tough second half that finished two tries a piece. Former Easts veterans Kev Stephensen and Isaac Kaufmann will again lead the way in a team that includes Colts premiership winners Jon Stewart, Chris Cook and Steve Tyrrell.

West Brisbane Panthers v Redcliffe Dolphins at Bishop Park, Sunday 11pm

West Brisbane coach Wayne Weekes will need to address the inconsistency that saw them come unstuck against Valleys in their opening match. The Panthers raced to a 16-nil lead before going down 40-28. Former Wynnum Manly Seagulls’ Sean Loxley is at the back for the Panthers.

Meanwhile, Redcliffe Dolphins were one of three sides to get maximum points in round one. Five-eighth Alex Bishop landed a personal haul of 20 points in the Dolphins 40-12 victory over Gaters and again teams up with John Brady in the halves. With Redcliffe’s ISC side losing to Tweed Heads in round one, there’ll be plenty looking to push their case for higher honours.

Ipswich Jets v Gaters at North Ipswich Reserve, Sunday 11.45am

The Jets and Gaters will be desperate to kick-start their pre-season campaign with a win when they meet at North Ipswich Reserve on Saturday. Despite finishing on the wrong end of the scoreboard, the Jets nearly pulled off an incredible try in the final minute against Wynnum Manly Redland City in round one. They look to be playing with the same flair of the club’s Intrust Super Cup outfit.

Defensive drills would have been in order throughout the week, with both teams conceding than 40 or more points in the opening week. Gaters’ centre Tu’u Maori looms as a game-breaker. The 26-year-old Papua New Guinea representative has previously played with Newtown Jets and Sydney’s National Youth Competition side.

Wynnum Manly Redland City v Easts Tigers at BMD Kougari Oval, Sunday 12noon

Strap yourself in for a blockbuster day at BMD Kougari Oval. This match is the curtain raiser to the Intrust Super Cup clash in a huge afternoon of footy. Both teams are jam-packed with attacking talent and coming off opening round wins.

For WM Redland City, former Grafton Ghosts points scoring machine Mitchell Lollback is one to watch at fullback, while astute halfback Matt Smith continues to trek the comeback trail after a year off. Ex-Tigers prop Liufau Hala and hooker Mitchell Moore come up against their old club.

Easts look to be without Jack Joass (concussion) but have named the elusive Maeli Seve at the back – he should relish the extra space in attack. Young Whetu Austin, who spent time playing for Emerald, returns to the Tigers and gets a crack in the centres.
